Discovery protocol
The GIIG Glossary, published by the Government & Industry Interoperability Group in 2022, defines a discovery protocol as: ‘A network protocol that helps systems identify and connect to each other without (or with reduced) configuration efforts by users or system administrators. Note: Also referred to as service discovery, this requires a common language to allow software agents to make use of one another’s services without the need for continuous user intervention.’
